Sao Vicente is home to the country´s second larges city, Mindelo, as well as an aiport international an 18-hole golf course. Roughly rectangular in shape, it measures 24 km from East to est and only 16 km from North to South, it is situated between Santo Antao and Sao Nicolau in the north of the Archipelago. The islands takes it´s name from S.Vicent´s Day when it was discovered in January1492. However, it only began to grow in population in 1838 when it became a supply stop for ships crossing the Atlantic..

 The island has a population of around 80.300 most of which is concentrated in Mindelo. The terrain is mostly volcanic and mountainous the highest point of which is Monte Verde which reaches 774m high. There are a couple of beautifull and unspoilt beaches. Take a walk on Praia Grande or atch the windsurfers at San Pedro. Generally, Sao Vicente is cheper than Sal and definitely the cultural centre of Cape Verd with its mix Cubain, Brazilian, FRench, African and Englih influences. 

S.Vicente, the more cultural of all the islands, it has an enormously thriving music scene and that has produced international artists such Cesaria  Evora and Maria de Barros. It is well known for it´s festivals, the largest of which are Baia das Gatas music festival, and the Mindelo Carnival.
